What does maknae mean in korean? you might be heard of this word from many kpop news or fan blogging or whatever thing is.

Maknae means the youngest one in the group.

Taemin is the youngest member in SHINee, so Taemin is consider the maknae in Shinee. In western culture, we don’t count who’s how old, but in Asian culture, age is very important in their relationship. As you might know, Korean, Chinese and Japanese have different words for older people. They speak with more formal language to the elders. It is because in Asian culture, people respect elders. So, according to this Asian cultural background, Koreans almost always indicate who is older when two people meet for the first time between two people, and who is the oldest and who is the youngest when they meet in the group.

And in Kpop culture, there is specified Maknae characters. The youngests, they are always characterized as being cute.
