One of the biggest blockbusters of 2012 was Marvel’s The Avengers. The superhero movie set or tied a number of box office records and became the third highest-grossing film of all time with $1.51 billion.
It seems unlikely that any film can match The Avenger’s success. But wait, there is! Well, at least in China. Hallyu star Kwon Sang Woo’s Chinese Zodiac, which also stars martial arts extraordinaire Jackie Chan, grossed more than $100 million at the Chinese box office, just 18 days since its release, according to Joy n Contents Group, a film distribution company. This means that the movie has outperformed The Avengers, which ranked fifth at the Chinese box office last year.
Chinese Zodiac has been getting rave reviews from Chinese audiences, in large part due to the amazing stunts performed by Chan, an action legend. It also has been reported that the success of the movie is fueling the popularity of Kwon in the Chinese market. Fans have been heaping praise on the Korean actor on Sina Weibo, one of China’s major social networking sites.
Chinese Zodiac will be released in theaters in Korea next month.
