Is Kwon Sang-woo’s ‘Chinese Zodiac’ More Popular than ‘The Avengers’ in China?

One of the biggest blockbusters of 2012 was Marvel’s The Avengers. The superhero movie set or tied a number of box office records and became the third highest-grossing film of all time with $1.51 billion.

It seems unlikely that any film can match The Avenger’s success. But wait, there is! Well, at least in China. Hallyu star Kwon Sang Woo’s Chinese Zodiac, which also stars martial arts extraordinaire Jackie Chan, grossed more than $100 million at the Chinese box office, just 18 days since its release, according to Joy n Contents Group, a film distribution company. This means that the movie has outperformed The Avengers, which ranked fifth at the Chinese box office last year.

Chinese Zodiac has been getting rave reviews from Chinese audiences, in large part due to the amazing stunts performed by Chan, an action legend. It also has been reported that the success of the movie is fueling the popularity of Kwon in the Chinese market. Fans have been heaping praise on the Korean actor on Sina Weibo, one of China’s major social networking sites.

Chinese Zodiac will be released in theaters in Korea next month.

South Korean pop star Rain confined to barracks to ‘repent’ for his wrongdoings

Confined to the barracks....

Confined to the barracks….

South Korean pop icon Rain has been confined to barracks for a week, the defence ministry said today, after his dating put him on the wrong side of the country’s strict military service rules.

“Under a decision by the disciplinary commission of his unit, Rain will be confined to his barracks to spend seven days of repentance,” a defence ministry spokesman said.

The 30-year-old singer is a little over halfway through the two-year military service that is mandatory for all able-bodied South Korean men.

The country’s well-oiled celebrity gossip machine went into overdrive last week when it was confirmed that Rain had begun dating Kim Tae-Hee, 32, a TV drama star with a massive following in Japan.

But fan excitement was tempered by questions over how the couple had managed numerous reported dates. During their military service men are given little free time, even for family visits.

“He breached regulations against having private meetings while on official duty,” the ministry spokesman said.

The punishment was one of the lightest options open to the disciplinary committee.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon, is one of the biggest names in the world of K-pop, which commands a huge following in South Korea, across much of Asia and beyond.

After tabloid pictures of his dates with Kim emerged, the defence ministry’s website was bombarded with messages calling for him to be disciplined.

Some suggested he be forced to repeat his military service like the “Gangnam Style” star Psy, who was made to serve twice after it emerged he had furthered his showbiz interests during his first stint.

Military service is taken extremely seriously in South Korea, which remains technically at war with North Korea because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty.

Apart from those with physical disabilities, exemptions are rare and anyone refusing to serve – for moral or religious reasons – faces an automatic jail term.

Celebrities are frequently caught attempting to evade military service for fear they might be forgotten by their fans while in uniform.

Just as he was about to be called up in 2002, Korean-American pop singer Steve Yoo gave up his Korean nationality and became a naturalised US citizen.

The South Korean government considered it an act of desertion and he was deported and banned from returning for life.

Rain Under Military Investigation After Relationship Revealed

Korean soldiers are jealous of Rain’s excessive leaves..22 days more!!

After Rain and Kim Tae Hee revealed that they have been spending time together and have gotten into a relationship, the South Korean military has begun an investigation on Rain’s activities while granted leave from his duties.

Rain has been granted leave 25 times in the past year to work on recordings and rehearsals as part of his role in the military’s PR Support Team. Earlier this year, Rain was criticized for being allow to take over 60 days off, 22 days more than average, calling into question whether or not the singer has been abusing his position in the PR Support Team to spend personal time with Kim Tae Hee.

While the investigation is still fresh and no wrong doing has been proven, many have already condemned Rain for getting special treatment, presumably for being a celebrity. Many believe that he should be treated like any other soldier while enlisted in the military, feeling that his treatment is unfair.

Rain bi’s love life muddled by military issues

Oh dear tae-hee, am I breaching military policies by dating you?

Oh dear tae-hee, am I breaching military policies by dating you?

SEOUL: South Korean pop icon Rain has come under fire after reports revealing his relationship with a top TV actress suggested he might be flouting the terms of his compulsory military service.

Rain’s relationship with Kim Tae-Hee, a major TV drama star with a massive following in Japan, was first reported Tuesday by a tabloid magazine, sparking a fan frenzy on entertainment websites and social networks.

The magazine published photos showing Kim, 32, wearing a cap and surgical mask, getting into a car driven by the singer, who is halfway through the two-year military service that is mandatory for Korean men.

“They are currently getting to know each other with feelings for each other,” Kim’s agency said in a statement later Tuesday, confirming the two had been dating for about a month.

Fan excitement over the match-up between two of the country’s most high-profile celebrities was tempered by questions over how — as reported by the magazine — the couple had managed numerous dates over the past four weeks.

During their military service, Korean men are largely confined to their barracks and given little free time.

“I don’t care whoever Rain dates … but what kind of soldier gets Christmas holiday, where most guys toil shovelling piles of snow at the frontline units in bitter cold?” said one online commentator.

One of the tabloid pictures of the couple showed Rain, 30, driving a private car in military uniform, contrary to service guidelines, and not wearing his army beret.

The defence ministry’s website has been bombarded with messages calling for Rain to be disciplined, with more than 3,000 people signing an online petition urging an investigation.

“Rain has to serve twice, just like Psy did!” said another online comment, referring to the “Gangnam Style” singer who was forced to repeat his military service after it emerged he had furthered his showbiz interests during his first stint.

Rain has been serving as an “entertainment soldier” who appears in military-run TV and radio programmes aimed at boosting morale.

The singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-Hoon, is one of the biggest names in the world of K-pop which commands a huge following in South Korea and across much of Asia and beyond.

A defence ministry spokesman insisted Rain had earned holiday in line with military rules, but added that his army unit was “looking into the matter” given the public clamour.

“We advise soldiers to wear proper military outfit including a beret during a holiday but a failure to do so is not a punishable crime,” the spokesman told AFP.
